3 tips to be a better panelist
Being invited to speak on a panel means you get to give your opinion, which is fun if you are the kind of person who likes giving their opinion (and who isn't?!) AND you don't need to do nearly as much prep as you would if you were a speaker, but you still get to be on stage! Win win.
That said, there are good panelists and bad panelists. Here's how to be one of the good ones.
#1 Do some research
Who else will be on the panel? Look them up on LinkedIn and invite them to connect. Add a note that says something like, "Hey, we're speaking on the same panel! Also, I find you very attractive, what's your sign." Just kidding, only say the first part.
You can also ask for questions in advance -- they will probably have them and if not, just try to anticipate what they MIGHT ask and how you'll answer.
#2 Don't be afraid to disagree, just don't be a jerk about it
NO: Damian, no wonder your last business went under. You're such an idiot.
YES: I'd like to offer a different perspective.
#3 And for the love of God, if you have nothing to add, pass
If the person who went right before you answered the question the same way you planned to, don't say it again in your own words to fill the air. That's boring. And no one likes a boring panelist.
Similarly, read the room: If audience members are taking out their phones, you are boring them. Try to spice it up with a short, funny story or an unexpected (but not inappropriate) answer.
And p.s. Stay for the cocktail hour! It's right thing to do, plus that's when they'll give you your "thank you for panelling" gift.
